Planning a Kentucky Family Vacation: Where to Go & Stay

Kentucky is one of the most underrated family destinations in the country: horses, a life-size ark, a world-class zoo and aquarium, waterfalls and natural arches, and state parks — all within ninety minutes of each other, at prices that would not cover parking on the coast. Here is how to put a trip together for kids of every age, and for the grandparents coming along.
The Lexington Side: Horses
The Kentucky Horse Park is the anchor: a working horse farm and museum on 1,200 acres where kids meet champions face to face in the Hall of Champions, watch the Parade of Breeds, and take pony rides. Give it half a day.
Add a morning at Keeneland — even outside race season, families can watch morning workouts from the rail and eat breakfast at the Track Kitchen alongside the jockeys (our Keeneland guide explains how). During the April and October meets, kids get in free and The Hill tailgating area gives them room to run.
Round out Lexington with a horse farm tour (older kids love the barns; toddlers love the foals in spring), the Explorium children's museum downtown for a rainy morning, the Arboretum for a stroller walk, and ice cream on a warm evening. If you have older kids and a free day, Red River Gorge is an hour east with natural arches, easy trails, and the Nada Tunnel drive. More ideas in our Lexington guide.
The Williamstown Side: The Ark
The Ark Encounter is Kentucky's biggest family draw — a 510-foot ark with three decks of exhibits, the Ararat Ridge Zoo, playgrounds, and a restaurant that seats a thousand. Give it a full day, buy timed tickets before you travel, and go early. Add the Creation Museum (45 minutes north) on a second day if it is on your list.
Use the quiet lake town of Williamstown as your base rather than commuting from the city. Being five minutes from the gates means a mid-day nap or pool break and a return for the evening — the way every family with small kids ends up doing it. Our guide to things to do near the Ark fills the rest of the days: Williamstown Lake, Big Bone Lick's bison herd, and a Florence Y'alls baseball night.
The City Day
From Williamstown, the Cincinnati riverfront is about 35 minutes: underwater tunnels at the Newport Aquarium, the Cincinnati Zoo (one of America's best — say hi to Fiona), BB Riverboats on the Ohio, the Museum Center at Union Terminal for a rainy day, and dinner on Newport on the Levee with the skyline across the water. Our Northern Kentucky guide has the full lineup.
Packing and Pacing Tips
- Alternate big days with slow days. Ark, pool, zoo, pool. Kids and grandparents both last longer.
- Book timed tickets ahead for the Ark, the zoo, and Keeneland dining rooms; walk-ups are fine for the Horse Park most days.
- Bring layers. Kentucky springs and falls swing 30 degrees between morning and afternoon.
- Groceries once, at the start. Big breakfasts at the house, lunch at the attraction, one or two dinners out.
- Pick one amenity the trip orbits. A pool for summer, a game room and hot tub for fall.
A Sample Five-Day Itinerary
Days 1–2, Lexington: Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland morning workouts and Track Kitchen breakfast, a horse farm tour, downtown dinner, a pool or game-room evening.
Day 3: drive an hour north to Williamstown, groceries in Dry Ridge, pool afternoon at the house.
Day 4: the Ark Encounter, a mid-day break, evening at the fire pit.
Day 5: Cincinnati day — aquarium or zoo — then home to the hot tub.
With a sixth and seventh day: the Creation Museum, Red River Gorge, or a Bourbon Trail day for the adults while the grandparents take the kids to the lake.
Where Families Stay
Pick homes built for kids and grandparents alike: main-floor bedrooms, a pool or hot tub, a game room, and a kitchen and table that seat everyone. In Lexington, our houses sleep 10–12 with game rooms and pools — 3141 Lamar Drive has a pool, hot tub, and covered porch that families love. In Williamstown, 45 Castle-Knoll Road adds a playground and sleeps 16, and our larger estates sleep up to 30 for full reunions — see where big families stay near the Ark. One house, one kitchen, zero hotel-room shuffling.

45 CKRFrequently asked questions
Is Kentucky a good family vacation destination?
Yes, and an underrated one. Within ninety minutes you have the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland, the Ark Encounter, the Cincinnati Zoo and Newport Aquarium, state parks, and Red River Gorge — with lodging that costs far less than the coasts.
What is the best time of year for a Kentucky family trip?
Late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) have the best weather. October adds Keeneland racing and fall color but is the busiest month in Lexington. Summer is hot but the pools are open; the Ark and the zoo are year-round.
How many days do you need for a Kentucky family vacation?
Five days covers Lexington's horse country and Williamstown's Ark Encounter with a Cincinnati day in between. A long weekend works if you pick one side; a week lets you add Red River Gorge or the Bourbon Trail for the adults.
How far apart are Lexington and the Ark Encounter?
About 60 miles, roughly an hour north on I-75. Many families split the trip — two or three nights in Lexington, then two or three in Williamstown — rather than driving back and forth.
Can kids visit Keeneland?
Yes. Kids get in free on regular race days, and outside the meets families can watch morning workouts and eat breakfast at the Track Kitchen with the jockeys and trainers. It is one of Lexington's best cheap family mornings.
What kind of house should a family with grandparents book?
One with bedrooms on the main floor, a pool or hot tub, a game room for the kids, and a kitchen big enough for everyone. Our Lexington homes sleep 10–12 and our Williamstown homes 12–30, most with exactly that layout.
