Where to Stay for a Kentucky Bourbon Trail Trip

Bourbon Trail trips are group trips — college friends, golf buddies, bachelor parties, birthday weekends, and increasingly the whole family. And the single biggest planning decision is not which distilleries to tour. It is where everyone sleeps. Get that right and the rest of the weekend falls into place; get it wrong and you spend Saturday in the car.

Get the Geography Right First

The Bourbon Trail is a region, not a road. The eastern cluster — Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Castle & Key, Wild Turkey, Town Branch — orbits Lexington and Frankfort. The western side — Bulleit, Jeptha Creed, Whiskey Row, and the Bardstown distilleries — orbits Louisville. They are 75 miles apart.

Why One Big House Beats a Hotel Block

Six hotel rooms scatter your group down a hallway and give you a lobby as your only common space. One large home gives you a kitchen for slow mornings, a dining table big enough for everyone, and a place for the night's main event: the bottle share. Every group comes home from the Trail with bottles — the house is where you actually open them.

Add a hot tub, a fire pit, or a golf simulator and the house stops being where the trip pauses and becomes part of the trip. Home Base: Lexington

Best for: first-timers, anyone pairing bourbon with horse country or Keeneland, and groups who want the best dinner options.

You are 20–40 minutes from the eastern distilleries and a short ride from Lexington's best group dinners on Short Street, Jefferson Street, and in the Distillery District. Keeneland is ten minutes away in April and October. Our Lexington homes sleep 10–12; several — like 341 Sherman Avenue and 353 Owsley Avenue — have golf simulators, hot tubs, and game rooms built for exactly this kind of weekend.

Home Base: Shelbyville & Simpsonville

Best for: trips built around Bulleit, Louisville's Whiskey Row, or Bardstown — and groups who want space and quiet between distillery days.

Bulleit Distilling Co. is ten minutes from our Shelbyville home, downtown Louisville is about half an hour, and Lexington is 40 minutes the other direction, so this side works as a compromise base too. Our Simpsonville property sits on ten acres with a pool, golf simulator, and horse barn — a true retreat between distillery days — and 119 Adair Avenue in Shelbyville adds a hot tub, fire pit, and putting green. What to Look for in a Bourbon Trail House

• Bed count that matches the group. Bachelor parties and golf trips need real beds, not sofa beds, after a long day.
• Bathrooms for the morning. Twelve people and a 9 a.m. tour slot need more than two showers.
• A pickup-friendly driveway. Tour vans need room to turn around.
• The evening amenity. A golf simulator, hot tub, or fire pit is where the second half of the day happens.
• A real kitchen and a big table. Breakfast for twelve before the first tour beats a restaurant at nine on a Saturday.
• Distance to dinner. Lexington homes are minutes from downtown; the Simpsonville estate is the place to cook and stay in.

Booking Tips

Book the house before the tours — homes that sleep 12+ go earliest in April–May and September–October, which are also Keeneland race meets. Two to four months ahead is safe for a spring or fall weekend; more for a holiday. Then book the tours, then the driver, then Saturday dinner.
